The Irish-language owned television production company and broadcaster, TG4, have explained their reason for withdrawing from Junior Eurovision 2020.
TG4 decided that despite the EBUs decision to broadcast from small venues in each country, did they decide that they would still be withdrawing. TG4 representative Laura Ní Cheallaigh made a statement about their final call for their participation in the contest:
“TG4 was aware that EBU was preparing backup plans in the event that Junior Eurovision in Poland would not be possible to do live. However, in July, we had to decide everything because of the production targets here and our selection process. We decided that the most cautious solution would be withdraw this year. This decision is final, but we hope Ireland be involved again in 2021.”
Ireland’s history in Junior Eurovision started in 2015 when they participated for the first time with Amiee Banks and her song “Réalta na mara”. She finished in 12th place. Since then, Ireland have had a mixed bag of results. Their best placing is 10th place, which they achieved in 2016 with Zena Donelly and her song “Bríce ar bhríce”. Last year was Ireland represented by the talented Anna Kearney in Gliwice, Poland. She finished in 12th place with her beautiful song “Banshee”.
