Söngvakeppnin submissions deadline approaches despite Iceland's uncertain Eurovision 2026 participation.
Icelandic broadcaster RÚV has confirmed that Söngvakeppnin will be going ahead in 2026, despite the broadcaster not having made a final decision on Iceland’s Eurovision 2026 participation yet.
The broadcaster explains that whilst the country’s participation in next years Eurovision Song Contest is not yet 100% set in stone, they will still be going ahead with annual national final, Söngvakeppnin, and that the submissions window will be closing at midnight on November 20th, 2025.
Back in September, RÚV confirmed they had reservations about Iceland’s participation in Eurovision 2026 due to Israel’s potential participation. It was reported that a final decision on Iceland’s participation in Eurovision 2026 would be made once a final decision has been made on Israel’s Eurovision participation.
Brothers VÆB were crowned the winners of Söngvakeppnin 2025 with their song “RÓA” and went on to represent Iceland at Eurovision 2025 in Switzerland. They qualified to the final, becoming the first Icelandic representatives to qualify since Systur in 2022. They finished in 25th place in the final with 33 points.
Which artists would you like to see competing in Söngvakeppnin 2026? Do you think Iceland will participate in Eurovision 2026 or not? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
