After the cancellation of Eurovision 2020, Slovenian broadcaster RTVSLO were quick to announce that Ana Soklič would be returning to Eurovision 2021, and soon after, it was announced that Ana would have her own national final to chose her 2021 entry. EMA 2021 will take place on February 27th, and will not only be used to chose Ana’s Eurovision entry, but also to celebrate 60 years of Slovenia in Eurovision.

Out of a total of 191 songs that were submitted to the broadcaster, three have been shortlisted for EMA 2021. However, there is the possibility that one or two more songs could be added to the line-up. The Slovenian broadcaster and Ana herself will, in the coming days, make a final decision on the songs that will be performed at EMA.

2021 marks the 60th anniversary of Slovenia’s participation in Eurovision. Serbian singer Lilijana Petrović sang “Neke Davne Zvezde“, a song written and composed by Slovenian musicians, at Eurovision 1961 for Yugoslavia, finishing in 8th place.

After the break up of Yugoslavia, Slovenia made their Eurovision debut as an independent nation in Millstreet in 1993, when 1X Band sang “Tih deževen dan“. After a non participation in 1994, Slovenia have participated every year since 1995, with their best results in 1995 and 2001, when Darja Švajger and Nuša Derenda respectively both finished in 7th place.
