Let’s speak dance! Watch Maruv lip sync to Verka Serduchka’s Lasha Tumbai
2019 Vidbir winner Maruv has taken on a role of Eurovision icon Verka Serduchka in a recent episode of “Masquerade” to compete for the right to unmask the next singer. She might have not brought her team to victory this time, but it sure is a sight to be seen!
In the lip sync battle Maruv is wearing Verka’s iconic stage outfit from her 2007 performance in Helsinki which brought Ukraine their first second place finish and, what most can agree, one of the most memorable Eurovision songs of all time.
Masquerade (Маскарад) is a Ukrainian version of a Romanian TV show “Mysteries in the Spotlight”, but can also be compared to The Masked Singer, since the idea of it is almost identical. Two teams consisting of three celebrities each compete in a lip sync battle to gain points and unmask one of the singers. Maruv has been chosen as one of the jurors and is competing in the MONATIK team. Earlier in the first episode, teams had to perform Maruv’s own Vidbir entry “Siren Song”.
Ukraine’s Eurovision history dates back to 2003 when they first debuted in the contest with the song Hasta La Vista. The second year Ukraine participated Ruslana won the entire contest with her song Wild Dances, which brought the contest in 2005 to Ukraine’s capital Kiev. After getting 2 second places and one third place in-between 2005 and 2014 Ukraine took a one-year break in 2015. Jamala made Ukraine’s comeback in 2016 with her 1944, she won the contest, and brought the contest once again back to Kiev. Go_A was selected to represent Ukraine in 2020, before the contest got cancelled.
