Last month, we told you that two Eurovision alumni – Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian – have been nominated for several ARIA awards in their home country of Australia. This year’s ceremony just wrapped up, and now we can count Guy among the winners!
Guy won the award for Best Video, a category voted by the public, with the visual for his song “Standing With You,” directed by James Chappell. This is Guy’s seventh ARIA win out of a staggering 34 nominations throughout his career. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many artists were only present via video chat; Guy, however, was right there at the Star Event Centre in Sydney to pick up his pointy trophy, and also engage in some banter with comedian and Australia Decides host Joel Creasey.
As for Jessica Mauboy, she didn’t win any of the three categories she was nominated for, but she did have her shining moment towards the end of the show. Jessica opened the final performance of the ceremony, leading an ensemble of women musicians in a soaring tribute to the late Helen Reddy. The impressive lineup which also included Montaigne – as well as Dami Im and Kate Miller-Heidke as part of the backing chorus – performed “I Am Woman,” the signature tune by Reddy who passed away in September.
Happy for Guy? Sad for Jessica? Just excited about a great show? Let us know in the comments below! Also, check out this Eurovoxx classic from 2018, where the team discussed both Guy and Jessica’s Eurovision entries.
