Tonight, November 8th, we were looking to see who would be winning big at the MTV European Music Awards. Little Mix were hosting the show throughout the night and made us hyped for the nominees. In the category for European artists, there were several familiar names that popped up who we know well in the Eurovision community.
The most exciting name among them is Diodato, he took the title of “Best Italian Act” at the EMA’s and was voted for by the public in Italy. It’s really huge that a Eurovision artist is taking a step further into the mainstream music industry by winning a prestigious award like this. He also won the Sanremo Festival in Italy this year and was scheduled to fly the Italian flag to Rotterdam, Netherlands for the 2020 Eurovision Song Contest. The saddest news is that we didn’t get to see him perform in this year’s edition of Eurovision Song Contest as it was cancelled due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
It was also announced that more familiar names won for their countries at the EMA’s. Margaret was awarded “Best Polish act” and she also won the same award in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018. She participated in the former Polish national final Krajowe Eliminacje in 2016 and came 2nd with the song “Cool Me Down”. She has also participated in Melodifestivalen twice, once in 2018 with “In My Cabana” and in 2019 with “Tempo”.
A lesser known name, but also as important to talk about is Fernando Daniel that won “Best Portuguese Act”. He participated in Festival da Canção in 2017 with the song “Poema a Dois” and finished in 5th place. He also won the same award last year for “Best Portuguese Act”.
Mahmood who gained international recognition during 2019 after placing 2nd in the Eurovision Song Contest the same year, won “Best Italian Act” last year.
MARUV, who was due to represent Ukraine at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2019 before withdrawing, won “Best Russian Act” last year.
Roksana who won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest for Poland in 2018, won “Best Polish Act” last year.
Loïc Nottet won “Best Belgian Act” in 2017 and Amir won “Best French Act” in 2016 and 2017. Lena won “Best German Act” in 2011 & 2013 and Demy won “Best Greek Act” in 2013.
Dima Bilan has also won “Best Russian Act”, in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012. Compact Disco won “Best Hungarian Act” in 2012. Furthermore, Loreen also won “Best Swedish Act” in 2012, the same year she triumphed to victory at the Eurovision Song Contest for Sweden.
These are a few names who have won awards before at the MTV European Music Awards. Many more known names have won awards like Helena Paparizou in 2009 for “Best Greek act”, MaNga have also won an award in 2009 “Best Turkish Act”.
Anouk made it to “Best Dutch and Belgian Act” in 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2006. Kasia Kowalska won an award for “Best Polish Act” in 2001 and also did Alsou for “Best Russian Act” the same year.
Wishing all the best for Diadato, Margaret and Fernando Daniel for their rewarding wins. Are you happy about the results? Tell is in the comment below and on our social media!
