What is Melodifestivalen?

Melodifestivalen, otherwise known affectionately as Melfest, is an annual Swedish song contest organised by SVT and Sveriges Radio (SR) to determine the country’s representative for Eurovision Song Contest. It has been staged almost every year since 1959. The winner for Melodifestivalen is chosen by a panel of jurors and public voting, both of which have an equal influence over the final outcome.

The festival has produced 6 Eurovision winners and 24 top-five placing for Sweden at the Eurovision Song Contest to date. Memorable entries include Waterloo (1974); Den Vilda (1996), Euphoria (2012) and Undo (2014). The Mamas won Melodifestivalen 2020, and were due to sing their song Move in Rotterdam before the contest got cancelled.
