The search for the Israeli representative for Eurovision 2022 kicked into gear tonight, with the start of the new season of The X Factor Israel. The current season is titled X Factor for Eurovision, and its debut episode saw the beginning of the audition stage, in front of the five judges: Aviv Geffen, Margalit Tzan’ani, Ran Danker, Miri Messika and Eurovision 2018 winner Netta Barzilai.
This is the fourth season of The X Factor Israel, and marks the first time the format is used to select the Israeli entrant. Between 2015 and 2020, the representative was chosen via a different musical TV contest, HaKohav HaBa, with the song often selected internally by committee. In 2020 and 2021, Eden Alene’s Eurovision entries were chosen in separate broadcasts which functioned as her own private national finals.
This year, however, the entrant will be chosen along with their entry. According to Israeli Eurovision site EuroMix, this year’s final would see the contestants sing original songs selected from a pool of submissions – over 130 submissions actually – similar to the HaKohav HaBa final in 2016. These songs would act as the finalists’ de facto entries.
So far, six Eurovision hopefuls have advanced to the next stage. The auditions, which took place earlier this year, will continue airing for the next few weeks, until the start of the live televised broadcasts. The X Factor for Eurovision final is expected to take place in January 2022.
