Rock supergroup Intelligent Music Project along with Ronnie Romero, whose had been announced as Bulgarian representatives for next year contest by BNT, Bulgarian public broadcaster, have finally released their “Intention“, the first official competing song for Turin 2022 (Sorry Albania!), a pop-rock track which winks at Maneskin’s success. "Intention" lyrics
And I can move on from here
How simple: life goes on
Humble – that’s how I feel
“Sparking hot flames, holding on.”
Younger days run so clear
Through my mind, replaying my crime
Tearing me up, spreading fear
Obsession in my own time.
What life’s taken away, I’m not missing
Will I sit back and sigh?
A thunder of thoughts, I’m dismissing
Too scared to even try…
And in time I’ve always known
I’m never in the safety zone
I took the fight, but was I right?
They were sending me to war…
My intention is strong and real
Only power steels my will.
The illusion of safety’s surreal
Don’t let it go for the kill!
What life’s taken away, I’m not missing
Will I sit back and sigh?
A thunder of thoughts, I’m dismissing
Too scared to even try…
And in time I’ve always known
I’m never in the safety zone
I took the fight, but was I right?
They were sending me to war…
I don’t want to take on the pain
So, I go seek inner signs, or a calling
The more freedom I gain
The less real life I’m recalling.
And in time I’ve always known
I’m never in the safety zone
I took the fight, but was I right?
They were sending me to war…
Who hides behind the supergroup "Intelligent Music Project"?
Intelligent Music Project is a 10-year-old Bulgarian rock supergroup, whose line-up changes from time to time. The band will be led on the Eurovision stage by worldwide rock star Ronnie Romero, Chilean singer and songwriter, known to the fandom as lead singer of the rock bands Lords of Black, Rainbow, the Ferrymen, Michael Schenker Group, and Sunstorm. The other members set to take the stage in May are not unknown to Eurovision followers and rock enthusiasts:
Stoyan Yankoulov, one of Bulgaria’s most famous and renowned drummers, already represented Bulgaria on two different occasions, forming the duo Elitsa & Stoyan purposely to compete in Helsinki 2007, and also entered the contest with the same formation in 2013; in Malmo they sung the well-known “Samo Shampioni”, unfortunately not managing to qualify for the final;
Impassioned guitarist, Biser Ivanov is described by Kremona Guitars as “one of the most sought-after side and session men in Bulgaria, having worked with Lucy Diakovska, Vasko Vasiliv, Lili Ivanova and TOTO frontman Bobby Kimball, among others”;
Singer and guitarist Slavin Slavchev participated in, and won, the third season of the Bulgarian version of the X-Factor in 2014. During the program he was acclaimed for his performances of “Cryin” by Aerosmith, “Love Runs Out” by One Republic, “Who Wants to Live Forever” by Queen, and “Street Of Dreams” by Rainbow. In 2017 Slavin, together with Miloslav Petrov, Tihomir Vasilev and Nikolay Nikolaev established the alternative/art rock band “Julian’s Laughter”.
We know little about Dimiter Sirakov (base guitarist player) and Ivo Stefanov (cow instruments), but we are sure we are going to meet them and rock with them in Turin!
Other known songs by Intelligent Music Project are “Know”, “Every time”, “Where I belong”, and “”Now I know”.
Bulgaria in the Eurovision Song Contest
Turin 2022 will be Bulgaria’s 15th participation in the contest (if we count the 2021’s competition), with Kyiv 2005 being the first time the Balkan nation ever performed on the Eurovision stage with the song “Lorraine” by Kaffe, achieving only 19th place at that time’s single semi-final.
Bulgaria has failed to qualify for the final in eight out of thirteen appearances at the contest, most narrowly in 2012, when Sofi Marinova lost out on the 10th qualifying place from the second semi-final in a tie-break with Norway. However, on the other hand, they managed to reach the final on five different occasions and placed three times in the top five: already cited Elitsa & Stoyan placed fifth in 2007, the beloved Eurovision star Poli Genova reached the fourth position in 2016 with “If Love Was a Crime”, while how can we not remember one of the most iconic power ballad presented to the contest in the last years? Kristian Kostov and his magnificent “Beautiful Mess” came second in 2017 after conceding the victory to Portugal’s Salvador Sobral. In Bulgaria’s two most recent final appearances, supergroup Equinox placed 14th with “Bones” in 2018 and Victoria placed 11th with “Growing up is getting old” in 2021 after Greece’s Stefania surpassed her in the public vote, robbing her of the last spot in the top ten.
