Following Måneskin’s victory at Eurovision 2021, Italy was given the right to host Eurovision next year in 2022. Since then, 11 different cities from across the country have entered the bidding process. These are:
Turin were one of the first cities to express their interest on the 23rd May (the day after the grand final) and now their bid has taken the next step. At a meeting of the Third and Fifth Council Committees of Turin, which cover areas such as culture, tourism and work, two motions to host Eurovision were put forwards.
The positive effects that hosting Eurovision has on a city were noted during the meeting, for example that in 2018 the number of tourists visiting Lisbon increased by 37%. The council members were also keen to point out the boost it could give to the hospitality, catering and hotel sectors, all of which have suffered due to the pandemic.
Alberto Sacco, the Councillor for Tourism and Commerce, stated that Turin has been preparing a potential bid for candidacy for years. “Turin has the right skills to successfully host the event,” he went on to say. Of course, the city has previous experience in hosting international events, after holding the Winter Olympics in 2006.
EBU rules state that Eurovision must be held in an arena able to hold at least 10,000 people. The Pala Alpitour in Turin has a capacity of 12,350, and has previously hosted the Winter Olympic ice hockey events in 2006.
Despite all of these positives, it is important to note that aside from Naples, Turin has the highest accumulated debt of the 11 potential host cities. This could affect their ability to host in 2022.
