The first semi-final of Iceland’s national selection competition, Söngvakeppnin, took place tonight.

Iceland, which first participated in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1986 and has never won, has failed to qualify for the final five times in the last ten years, including last year. Therefore, Iceland decided to organize Söngvakeppnin to select its representative for Malmö. The national selection consists of three shows in total: two semi-finals and one final.

The first step of the national selection competition took place tonight, featuring five contestants. Anita and Væb, the favorites of the semi-final, earned their spots in the final show, which will take place on March 2nd.

Two more contestants from the second semi-final, which will take place on February 24th, will join them as finalists. Additionally, a wildcard selected by the channel will join the finalists, making a total of five finalists.

Last year, Iceland was represented by Dilja with the song “Power” but failed to qualify for the final.
