November 23, 2021

It has been confirmed that Romania will be reverting back to Selecţia Naţională to find their representative for Eurovision 2022. The song submissions will open on November 26th, and will close on December 10th. More details are expected in the coming weeks.

Romanian Head of Delegation, Iuliana Marciuc, has commented on Romania’s return to a national final, after opting for an internal selection in 2020 and 2021:

“I am glad that I will live, again, the emotions of the Eurovision competition and I hope that the return to the national selection system will be auspicious. Any competition attracts performance and offers a chance to every artist who wants to represent their country on the stage of the biggest music competition in the world

For me it is a great challenge, I have the experience of several national teams, I had the honor to be the head of the Romanian delegation and I strongly believe in our ability, of the TVR team, to obtain a new qualification in the Eurovision final.”

Romania has used Selecţia Naţională to find their Eurovision representative since 1993. The national final has brought them a mixed bag of results, with their best being in 2005 and 2010, when the finished in third place.

Romania has failed to qualify from the semi final on the last three occassions since 2018. Their last appearance in the final was in 2017, when Ilinca and Alex Florea finished in 7th place in with “Yodel It”.

In 2020, Romania decided to go for an internal selection for the first time in their Eurovision history. Up-and-coming singer, Roxen, was internally chosen by TVR, with her song “Alcohol You” being chosen by a mix of jury vote and televote via a live televised show. After the cancellation of the contest, TVR brought Roxen back for Eurovision 2021, with “Amnesia” being chosen as her entry.
