Monaco will not enter Eurovision 2024, Broadcaster however does not rule out a future return
It’s the news many were dreading following a glimmer of hope from the Monegasque nation in early September, but it has now been officially confirmed that Monaco will not be participating at the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
On September 1st, Monaco sparked significant excitement in the Eurovision community with the launch of their new television broadcaster TVMonaco. Considering this launch occurred two weeks prior to the deadline that countries could apply to compete in next year’s edition of the contest, many fans were hoping we would have another returning country back to the Eurovision stage.
There are a variety of reasons why Monaco is now eligible to participate at Eurovision; TVMonaco is a new member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) since its recent launch, this of which is a key requirement to take part. Furthermore; In order to participate, the candidate country must also have the human and technical resources to provide television broadcasting, which TVMonaco also has.
With this in mind, why has Monaco therefore decided not to participate in next year’s edition of the contest? The editor-in-chief of TVMonaco Frédéric Cauderlier has cleared up any rumours regarding non-participation, revealing that “It’s not planned for 2024. The deadlines are too tight for registrations. In addition, the launch of the channel does not allow us, at this stage, to focus on this project in the immediate future.”
Although this revelation comes as somewhat sad news to many Eurovision fans that were hoping for a mighty Monegasque return…this doesn’t rule out a possible comeback for the nation in the years to come. The last time Monaco participated in the Eurovision Song Contest was in Athens, Greece in 2006. They were represented by Séverine Ferrer with her song “Coco Dance”.
