Iconic Italian singer and songwriter Toto Cutugno has died today in Milan, Italy. The news has been broken by his manager with the following statement:

“After a long illness, his health has declined in the last few months. After little more than one month from his 80th birthday, one of the most famous Italian artists leaves us today. He was a songwriter of more than 100 million copies, one of the most representative of Italian music in the whole world, he knew how to bring the spontaneity and the tradition of Italian folk songs even abroad. His extraordinary career will keep on inspiring and uniting us”

Although his most famous song at home is “L’Italiano”, which earned him 5th place in Sanremo 1983, he won the 1990 Eurovision Song Contest in Zagreb with the (still relevant today) song “1992: Unite Europe”.

The following year, he presented the competition in Rome alongside Gigliola Cinquetti (winner of the 1964 Eurovision Song Contest with “Non ho l’età”), in one of the last editions Italy participated in, before their withdrawal in 1998 and the subsequent pause until their return in 2011
