"Lighter" is changed for Basel's stage

Kyle Alessandro will represent Norway with the song “Lighter,” co-written with Swedish producer Adam Woods. By winning Melodi Grand Prix, he secured his ticket to the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, which will take place in Basel, Switzerland. Norway will compete in the first semifinal on May 13, performing in the second half of the show.

On March 22, the 19-year-old singer along with project leader Mads Tørklep, met with TV 2 at a press event ahead of the Nordic Eurovision Party at Sentrum Scene in Oslo.

Tørklep stated that Alessandro had just returned from Basel, Switzerland to work on the staging for “Lighter.” The team is making changes with the aid of their stage director and professional dancer, Mona Berntsen. Both the LED graphics and choreography have been updated, and some dancers have been replaced by backing vocalists. The most notable change is the whole second added to the song for an effect where the camera is behind the singer before moving to a close-up shot. The reasoning? To give all of Europe goosebumps.

That’s not the only change, however. The prop towers from the original staging are facing issues due to being 4 meters tall, which is more than allowed on the Eurovision stage. If they can be folded down to 2 meters, then they can be used, but the real problem is the high costs of shipping them to Switzerland due to them not being in the EU. Tørklep says they’ll either have to pay high fees through the Swiss customs or move them back to Norway afterwards, instead of just leaving them in Switzerland. An alternate solution having a company in Germany do it, but they’ll have to bring them back to Norway with them, which would be more expenses. He calls it a complicated situation that’s what he’s currently working on, joking that ESC is just boring paperwork and no fun, but that there’s been a lot of focus on these towers for the time being.

Kyle Alessandro follows Gåte and their song, “Ulveham,” who represented Norway in 2024.

The last winner from Norway was the esteemed Alexander Rybak, breaking records in 2009 with his song, “Fairytale.”

Could Kyle Alessandro be Norway’s next “golden boy” and bring them to the grand final? What are you hoping to see on stage? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
