12-year-old singer-songwriter David Charlin was chosen to represent Kazakhstan with his through provoking ballad Jer-Ana (Mother Earth) about taking care of the planet. Read further to know all the information you need to know about this multi-talented youngster and his entry for Yerevan.
Who is David Charlin?
David is living with his family in the bustling city of Almaty by the slopes of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains in southern Kazakhstan. Aside from singing, he is also fond of dancing and traveling. Moreover, he also enjoys skiing, chess, drawing, tennis, and drone flying.
How did he get selected?
David earned the right to represent transcontinental Kazakhstan via televised children’s vocal competition Baqytty Bala (Happy Child) last August. Following the results, he posted on his Instagram, “Thank you all for congratulations! What happened yesterday is more like a dream or a fairy tale, and I haven’t fully realized what happened yet. But I am incredibly pleased to realize that so many people have supported me.”
The international competition brought together young singers in various countries where winners received special prizes, diplomas, and certificates. One familiar face to all Junior Eurovision fans in the contest is Melani Garcia who represented Spain in the contest in 2019. Melani progressed in the final round of Baqytty Bala where she placed second to David.
Tell us about the song!
Jer-Ana (Mother Earth) sends the message of calling for action for people to work for the better future, especially in terms of environmental sustainability and human relationships. The lyrics repeatedly questions peoples’ lack of compassion while calling for action and, at the same time, addresses the planet to ask for forgiveness.
These themes are well-knit with the music video where David starts in a meadow emerging as he walks then human actions start to spring represented by statues and he becomes surrounded with problems and destruction brought about by these activities. However, the video ends with a hopeful tone when he rebuilds what was broken as a symbol of human oneness and that we can still make things right for the planet.
Sing along to 'Jer-Ana' (Mother Earth) Lyrics
Kazakh and English
Like stars in the night sky
Sometimes we don’t know why
We can’t see the lights of the sun
But I know we have to try
See the good thing in our life
Feel the magic in our hearts
Our future got to be like
Fairytale with flashlights
We just have to make it right

See the good thing in our life

Our future got to be like
Fairytale with flashlights

Life’s beautiful with nature
Manage to cherish it with love
With an open heart.
Mother Earth, you and me
“I’m sorry.”
We do not spare, do not love,
Why?
There are so many trials in life,
There are many questions in life.
Why don’t we think them over?
In the hands of virtue
In the first place
We can love it for sure there.
Life’s beautiful with nature
Manage to cherish it with love
With an open heart.
Mother Earth, you and me
“I’m sorry.”
We do not spare, do not love,
Why?
Your embrace is just a life
Every day, every moment
Let your heart beat together
Life’s beautiful with nature
Manage to cherish it with love
With an open heart.
Mother Earth, you and me
“I’m sorry.”
We do not spare, do not love,
Why?
Kazakhstan in Junior Eurovision
Kazakhstan debuted in Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2018, with their best placing in 2019 and 2020, where they achieved consecutive second places, represented by Yerzhan Maxim with the song “Armanyńnan qalma” and Karakat Bashanova with the song “Forever,” respectively. This year will be the country’s fifth participation in the contest.
Since its broadcaster Khabar Agency (KA) is an associate member of the European Broadcasting Union, the country needs special invitation to participate in Eurovision events.
