After initially confirming that they would not be participating in this years Junior Eurovision Song Contest, Italian broadcaster RAI has taken a U-turn and have now confirmed that they will be participating in Junior Eurovision 2021. This now brings the total number of participating countries up to 16.
At the beginning of July 2021, Italy announced that they would be withdrawing from the contest for a second year running, after missing out on the 2020 contest due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Their main reasons for withdrawal were the broadcaster wanting to limit the presence of minors on television, and to focus on other projects. The broadcaster was also focusing its efforts on hosting Eurovision 2022.
Italy joined the Junior Eurovision family in 2014 and got their journey off to a great start when Vincenzo Cantiello was crowned the winner with his song “Tu Primo Grande Amore”. Since then, Italy has gone on to have further success in the contest, achieving a further three top 10 placings. Italy was one of several countries to withdraw from Junior Eurovision 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
