Miriana Conte will not allowed to use the word "Kant" in her Eurovision 2025 entry.

Miriana Conte was crowned Malta’s Eurovision 2025 representative after winning MESC 2025 on February 8th, and it is understood that the EBU had approved Miriana’s song for Eurovision 2025, including the lyric “Kant”. However, the EBU have now done a 180 and have confirmed to the Maltese delegation that they will not be allowed to use the Maltese word “Kant” in their entry for Eurovision 2025. This comes just six days before the songs submission deadline for this years contest on March 10th.

The word “Kant” in the Maltese language means “singing.” Whilst the word itself is inoffensive, it is its similarity to another word that has been deemed innapropriate for the Eurovision audience. Despite TVM reporting that the Eurovision Song Contest Reference Group have allowed the word “Kant” to be used in Malta’s entry, PBS have stated that they believe the BBC have lodged a complaint and requested for the word “Kant” to be removed from Malta’s entry.

Scott Mills, who is a radio presenter for BBC radio and semi final co-commentator for the United Kingdom, has previously stated: “We can’t talk about Malta’s one, at all. We definitely can’t play a clip of it… ever, on the BBC.”

This is not the first time that the EBU have stopped an arist from singing a certain word on the Eurovision stage. Back in 2022, Citi Zēni represented Latvia with their song “Eat Your Salad”. The first line of the song is: “Instead of meat, I eat veggies and pussy”. The EBU did not allow the group to sing the word “pussy” at Eurovision 2022. So, the lead singer did not sing that word in the semi final, and let the audience sing it for him instead.

What are your thoughts on this decision from the EBU? Do you think that Miriana Conte should be allowed to sing “Kant” at Eurovision 2025? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
