In a surprising development, Moldova has announced its withdrawal from the Eurovision Song Contest 2025!

Decision Driven by Multiple Factors
Organizers cited “economic, administrative, and artistic challenges” as key reasons behind the decision. Despite not competing, Moldova 1 will broadcast the two semifinals and the grand final live from Basel, ensuring Eurovision fans in the country can still enjoy the spectacle.
“This decision was not an easy one but necessary in the current context. This year’s national selection highlighted certain challenges, including a decline in public interest and the overall quality of the songs and artistic performances. This has created a negative perception among specialists and the public, underscoring the need for substantial reform in the selection process,” explained Corneliu Durnescu, director of Moldova 1.
Plans for Future Participation
Acknowledging the concerns raised by professionals and audiences, Durnescu revealed that TRM, the national broadcaster, intends to overhaul the selection process for future editions.
“We consulted with music industry specialists, and the majority expressed serious reservations about Moldova’s participation this year, aligning closely with the jury’s opinion for this edition selected by TRM. We respect the views of professionals and the general public and understand the need to make responsible decisions,” he added.
The director emphasized that Eurovision participation involves significant expenses, ranging from national final organization and artist promotion to travel, accommodations, and technical preparations. He clarified the official participation fee for Moldova is €21,486, countering public rumors suggesting a much higher figure of €176,000.
“The public broadcaster remains available to provide accurate information as needed. We are committed to transparency, and Eurovision is no exception. At the same time, we cannot allow public opinion to be misled by false or malicious narratives,” Durnescu stressed.
Redirecting Resources
TRM plans to redirect resources initially earmarked for Eurovision 2025 to other projects. Daniela Crudu, Head of the Eurovision Moldova Delegation, expressed hope that this decision would rejuvenate interest in future participation.
“This decision was not easy, but I assure you it was thoroughly analyzed. We all would have liked to organize a national final and choose the song to represent us at the international stage. However, we are firmly convinced that this decision will boost interest in participation for future editions. We will ensure that we return to Eurovision with strength. It is important to support those who aspire to perform on big stages and give them the opportunity to prepare better,” Crudu stated.
Looking Back and Ahead
This year would have marked Moldova’s 20th participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Following live auditions on January 18, 12 artists and bands had already qualified for the national final. While the immediate focus will be on restructuring and addressing identified challenges, fans can rest assured that Moldova plans to come back stronger in future editions of Eurovision.
