It's another internal selection for the United Kingdom as BBC unveils plans for Basel.

It has been confirmed that the United Kingdom’s Eurovision 2025 representative will be chosen via an internal selection, as well as their song. This will mark the fifth consecutive internal selection for the United Kingdom at Eurovision.

The BBC confirm that the search for the United Kingdom’s Eurovision 2025 representative is well underway, and has been for several months now. U.K. record labels, publishers, songwriters, BBC Music and BBC Introducing have all been playing their part in trying to find the country’s next Eurovision representative.

David May returns

Leading U.K. music industry figure David May will be teaming up with Andrew Cartmell, (the United Kingdom’s Head of Delegation and Executive Producer at BBC Studios North), to find the country’s next Eurovision representative. David has previously worked with the BBC team at Eurovision 2022 in Turin, as Sam Ryder’s manager. Ultimatley, he is a Music Manager with over 17 years in the industry in the U.K.

David May is thrilled to be working with the BBC again for Eurovision 2025, as he explains: “I’m excited to be working with BBC Studios and the BBC on this journey. We’re seeking talent and a song that embodies the essence of UK music. We want to collaborate with an authentic act who has a genuine, heartfelt story to tell, and an unmatched vocal tonality and range. Ultimately we’re looking for a powerful three-minute performance that resonates with and moves audiences across Europe and beyond.”

Likewise, Andrew Cartmell is happy to be working with David again: “David played a major part in Sam Ryder’s success in 2022, and I’m thrilled that we are working together again. David has huge industry expertise, a real understanding of how Eurovision works and a determination, along with the BBC and BBC Studios to achieve a high placing in May next year.”

Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment at the BBC, is equally as happy to have David on the team for Eurovision 2025: “David knows exactly what it is like to be at the business end of the leaderboard at Eurovision, so this experience combined with his in-depth knowledge of the UK music scene ensures that he is perfectly placed to collaborate with us in the search for our artist and song for 2025.”

Since 2020, the United Kingdom has decided to go for an internal selection to find their Eurovision representative, which is something that has brought a very mixed bag of results for the country. 2021 saw James Newman and “Embers” languishing at the bottom of the scoreboard, but just one year later, that was almost completely turned around, as Sam Ryder brought the United Kingdom back to the top of the scoreboard.

With his song “Spaceman”, Sam brought the United Kingdom their first jury win in Eurovision, achieved a top 5 televote result for the first time since 2011, finishing in second place overall. Mae Muller and Olly Alexander were not quite able to replicate Sam’s success, as they finished in 25th and 18th place respectively. Will the United Kingdom’s Eurovision 2025 representative be able to get the country back into the top 10, or even top 5?
