TVR has announced that they will be taking a new approach towards Eurovision, starting in 2023.
After confirming their participation for Eurovision 2023 back in August, the Romanian broadcaster has now confirmed that they will be taking a new approach to the contest, starting with Selecția Națională.
The Board of Directors, Mihai Predescu, has signed off on the budget for Romania’s Eurovision 2023 participation and for their national selection process. This comes after the members of the board voted unanimously to allocate the necessary resources for the organisation of Selecția Națională.
Mihai also confirmed one of the biggest changes to be made to Romania’s selection process for Eurovision 2023 – 100% televoting. In previous years, Romania has typically used juries to select their Eurovision entry, with little to no public vote alongside this.
For context, in last years national final, the public only had a 17% say in the final result, with the jury vote accounting for a whopping 83% of the final result.
“We are a new team and we propose a different Eurovision contest, based on transparency, professionalism and digitization. We changed the voting system: only the public will choose the piece that will represent Romania. And one more thing: this Eurovision will be on air on TVR and much more present than in the past online, on social media networks.”
The team at TVR are expected to finalise all the details for Romania’s national selection process for Eurovision 2023 in the coming days, with these details being communicated as soon as possible. The next meeting of the Board of Directors is expected to take place in November.
WRS is the most recent winner of Selecția Națională, winning with his entry “Llámame”. He went on to become the first Romanian act to qualify to the Eurovision final since Ilinca and Alex Florea in 2017. He finished in 18th place in the final with 65 points.
