The Romanian representative of 2020 and 2021, Roxen, recently came out as non-binary. On an open conversation with fans on TikTok, the singer stated they always felt like a “boy in a girl’s body”, since they were attached to activities that are stereotypically labelled for boys.
Later on, one fan asked them if they identified as non-binary, getting a yes for an answer – “Yes, that’s the word” – confirmed the Romanian singer. However, Roxen clarified they don’t feel bothered if somebody addresses them with he/him or she/her pronouns.
Roxen was chosen to represent Romania at Eurovision 2020 with the song “Alcohol You”, and was confirmed by the Romanian broadcaster TVR to represent the country in 2021, after the competition was cancelled in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Their song “Amnesia” performed at the first semi-final ended up a non-qualifier, finishing in 12th place.
