Monaco will broadcast the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.
It has been confirmed that Monaco will be broadcasting this years Eurovision Song Contest. This will be the first time since 2007 that Monaco will broadcast Eurovision. Could be a sign that the country could be making a return to the contest?
Monaco joins other non-participating countries Chile, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Moldova and the United States, in broadcasting Eurovision 2025. In Chile, viewers can tune in to the contest on Zapping for the second year in a row. In the United States, you can watch it on Peacock.
For those watching in non-participating countries with no official broadcast, the contest will be live streamed on YouTube. Viewers from these countries will be able to vote as part of rest of the world vote.
Monaco in Eurovision
Monaco made their Eurovision debut in 1959, and participated every year until 1979. During this time, they won the contest once, in 1971 with Séverine and “Un banc, un arbre, un rue”. However, due to lack of funding, and failed negotiations with France over hosting of the 1972 contest, the BBC hosted the contest in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Monaco withdrew from the contest in 1980, and didn’t return until 2004. They participated in 2004, 2005 and 2006 before withdrawing in 2007. Out of these three participations, the country failed to qualify from the semi final, with their best result coming in 2004 when Maryon finished in 19th place in the semi final.
Despite not participating, TVM broadcast the 2007 contest, making them eligable to compete in 2008; however, Monaco declined against returning. TMC announced that it was possible Monaco could return in 2009, following talks with the EBU, but in the end, they did not. In the years since, there have been a few occassions when there was a glimmer of hope that Monaco could return to Eurovision, but nothing ever came of it.
In late March of 2024, TVMonaco gained full independent EBU membership, making them eligable to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest. Could we be seeing a Monaco Eurovision return in the near future?
