Mimicat releases brand new track and music video for "Agostinho".
Portugal’s Eurovision 2023 representative Mimicat, is back with a brand new song, titled “Agostinho” (Augustine). The release of her new song marks a the beginning of a new cycle for Mimicat, including songs “with more truth and joy than ever”, as Mimicat says. This new music from Mimicat has come about from a fusion between Filipe Survival, Maninho, Gonçalo Malafaya and Mimicat herself, and is a cross between more popular and more urban sounds, which Mimicat has already been exploring.
This is not the first time that Mimicat and Filipe Survival have worked together, as she explains: “Survival and I have been producing together for a long time, and we feel free to explore and seek inspiration from each other.”
Joining Mimicat, Gonçalo Malafaya and Filipe Survival on this track is Phelipe Ferreira, who helped with the writing of the song and João Bessa, who was in charge of mixing and mastering of the song.
“Agostinho” began its life as “Mulher” (Woman), and included Gonçalo Malafaya’s voice and guitar playing on it. However, this soon changed, and the search for more traditional older names gave way to Agostinho, as Mimicat explains:
“During the creation of the song, we ended up describing our ‘Agostinho’, the one who is for us the classic Portuguese: handsome, easy going, charming, smiling, hot blooded and with race, but at the same time mysterious, because after all, no-one knows him that well. Everyone dreams of Agostinho in our narrative and only he knows what he wants.”
Since winning Festival da Canção in 2023, Mimicat says that she had not yet defined what she wanted to show everyone: “Things happened so quickly and so intensely that I never managed to create the project I really wanted. I went with the flow but it was important to have written the songs I did and in the way I did to close this cycle with an album I am very proud of.”
Agostinho is available on all major streaming platforms, as well as YouTube, where you can see the official music video. The song promises to leave everyone with the curiosity of wanting to hear more of what’s to come.
Mimicat, born Marisa Mena in Coimbra, Portugal, is a Portuguese singer-songwriter who’s singing career began in 2001 with her participation in Festival da Canção. Under the stage name Izanema, she performed “Mundo colorido”, but did not advance past the semi final stage. Since then, she has gone on to release music as solo artist, as well as with others. In 2014, she became the lead singer for the band “The Casino Royale”.
In 2023, Mimicat returned to Festival da Canção with “Ai coração”. After winning both the jury and televote, she went on to represent Portugal at Eurovision 2023 in Liverpool. She brought Portugal to the final for a third year running, where she finished in 23rd place.
