The road to Eurovision 2025 has officially begun in Sweden with the recent announcement of significant changes to the format of Melodifestivalen, the country’s beloved national selection process. Known for producing some of Eurovision’s most iconic entries, Melodifestivalen is a staple in the Swedish music calendar, and this year’s adjustments are set to bring a fresh dynamic to the competition.

New Format for 2025

One of the most notable changes for Melodifestivalen 2025 is the introduction of a completely new format for the semi-finals. Instead of the traditional four semi-finals, next year will see three semi-finals, each featuring eight songs. The top four songs from each semi-final will advance directly to the final, a move that intensifies the competition and raises the stakes for each artist.

Additionally, the much-loved “Second Chance” (Andra Chansen) round has been scrapped. In previous years, this round provided an opportunity for artists who narrowly missed out on qualifying from their semi-final to secure a spot in the final. However, starting from 2025, the competition will adopt a more straightforward approach, with only the top songs from each semi-final advancing directly to the final.

The Voting System Gets a Revamp

Another major change comes in the form of the voting system. In an effort to increase transparency and engagement, the new system will allow for real-time voting updates during the live shows. Viewers will be able to see which songs are leading in the votes as the performances progress, adding an extra layer of excitement to the proceedings. This move aligns with SVT’s goal to make Melodifestivalen more interactive and reflective of public opinion.

Fewer Participants but More Drama

With the reduction in the number of semi-finals, the total number of participants in Melodifestivalen 2025 has been decreased to 24, down from 28 in previous years. This change means that each slot in the competition is even more coveted, and the selection process is expected to be more competitive than ever. For fans, this promises more memorable performances and tighter competition as Sweden searches for its next Eurovision representative.

Keeping the Tradition Alive

Despite these changes, some beloved traditions remain. The final will still be held at the Friends Arena in Stockholm, a venue that has become synonymous with Melodifestivalen’s grand finale. The show will continue to feature a mix of established artists and newcomers, maintaining its role as a platform for discovering and celebrating Swedish music talent.

What to Expect from Melodifestivalen 2025

With these changes, Melodifestivalen 2025 is shaping up to be an even more thrilling and unpredictable event. The competition is known for its high production values, catchy tunes, and the ability to surprise both fans and critics alike. As always, the show will be closely watched not just by Swedish audiences but by Eurovision fans across Europe, eager to see which artist will represent Sweden in 2025.

Eurovoxx will be covering every step of the journey, from the first semi-final to the crowning of Sweden’s Eurovision representative. Stay tuned for more updates and in-depth coverage as the competition unfolds!
