Iceland will not be participating in Junior Eurovision 2024.
Despite Icelandic broadcaster RÚV confirming in December 2023 that they would consider participating in Junior Eurovision in the future, it seems that we might have to wait a little longer to see Iceland in the contest, as they have confirmed they will not be making their debut in this years contest in Spain.
Whilst the broadcaster is not entirely opposed to joining Junior Eurovision, RÚV have reported that they need time and money to plan and develop their ideas before they will consider participating in the contest.
Iceland may not have ever participated in Junior Eurovision, but they have broadcast it once, in 2021. The same year, the broadcaster sent a delegation to observe that years contest in Paris. However; nothing has come of that, as of yet.
The 22nd Junior Eurovision Song Contest will take place at Caja Mágica in Spain’s capital, Madrid on Saturday 16th November. This will be the first time that Spain will host Junior Eurovision, and the first time they will host a Eurovision-related event since 1969.
To date, 13 countries have confirmed their participation in this years contest: Armenia, Estonia, France, Georgia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malta, North Macedonia, Poland, Spain, The Netherlands and Ukraine. Albania and Portugal, who both participated in the 2023 contest have yet to make any announcement on this years contest.
Just a few weeks ago, the United Kingdom confirmed they would be withdrawing from the contest this year, mainly due to the contest changing to Saturday evening, and low viewing figures for the 2022 and 2023 contests.
Are you sad to see Iceland not making their Junior Eurovision debut this year? Did you expect to see Iceland out of the contest for yet another year? Let us know what you think in the comments below!

Then it’s up to Norway to come back to JESC, stronger than ever, send Melodi Grand Prix Junior 2021 winners Josefine Westgaard and Oskar Hogetveit to Madrid with a self-written potential sequel to “Smitte deg med glede”, and win Junior Eurovision at least once.
