Every year, Dutch television programs go head-to-head to win the “Gouden Televizier-ring”, the most important television award of The Netherlands. And this year, the Eurovision Song Contest is shortlisted. This means the show can be nominated to win the ring!
What is the "Gouden Televizier-ring"?
Since the year 1964, Dutch television viewers are able to decide what the best television program of the year was. The show that gets the most votes from the public, will receive the “Gouden Televizier-ring”.
Choosing the best television program of the year, does not happen overnight. That is why there are a few rounds of voting before the 3 finalists are chosen. These 3 finalists will appear on the “Gouden Televizier-gala”, the event where the winner will be revealed and the cast and crew will receive the ring.
This year, The Eurovision Song Contest 2021 is added to the shortlist, which is one of the rounds the programs have to go through in order to be nominated for the ring.
What does it mean to be shortlisted?
There are 4 qualification rounds to determine which programs will be on the shortlist. All of the qualifiers are determined by the votes of Dutch television viewers.
The first qualification round is about television programs that aired in August, September and October 2020. In the second qualification round people vote for their favorite program that aired in November 2020, December 2020 and January 2021. The third round is for programs that aired in February, March and April 2021. And in the final round Dutch viewers vote for their favorite program of May, June and July 2021.
There are also 5 programs that receive a wildcard from the judges to be on the shortlist.
What happens after the shortlist?
Now that The Eurovision Song Contest 2021 is added to the shortlist, Dutch television viewers are able to vote for the contest, to become a real nominated program. This means The Eurovision Song Contest 2021 can be one of the 3 finalists that will appear at the “Gouden Televizier-Gala”. When they receive enough votes to be on the top 3, they will have a shot at the prestigieus “Gouden Televizier-ring”.
