Sanremo’s artistic director has hinted about the possibility of postponing Italy's selection show.
After Amadeus confirmed supermodel Naomi Campbell as host for the Sanremo Music Festival 2021, the artistic director of the show maintains his position: He wants an audience or he will threaten to postpone the event to 2022.
“Without an audience, there is no festival and we will talk about it again in 2022: what’s the problem?” said Amadeus in an interview.
However, the Italian broadcaster Rai has insisted that this year’s Sanremo Festival would not be delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The debate in Italy is raging. The Government refuses to allow the festival to welcome an audience due to health restrictions whilst the artistic director does not understand why the television studios can welcome the public but not the Ariston theatre for the festival.
Yet, the theatre has changed its layout to ensure the safety of the audience. So far, the broadcaster and the artistic director have not decided whether the festival could be postponed.
If Sanremo is postponed this would raise another issue: how to select the Italian entry for the Eurovision 2021? Italy could opt for an internal selection like other countries.
