Born Johannes Pietsch in Vienna in 2001, JJ spent part of his early life in Dubai before returning to Austria in 2016. His musical career gained national attention in 2021 when he became a finalist on ORF’s Starmania, where his unique countertenor voice set him apart. Since then, he has been performing at the Vienna State Opera, participating in major productions such as Die Zauberflöte, Von der Liebe Tod, and Tschick.
JJ is also currently studying classical music at the Music and Art Private University of Vienna (MUK) under the mentorship of Univ.-Prof. Kammersängerin Linda Watson, solidifying his place as a rising star in Austria’s classical and contemporary music scene.
🎶 Austria’s Selection Process
Austrian broadcaster ORF once again conducted an extensive selection process to find its 2025 Eurovision act. The search included a songwriting camp and evaluations by a national and international jury, featuring music experts and Eurovision fan clubs. JJ emerged as the standout choice, thanks to his ability to merge operatic techniques with modern pop influences.
🎙️ ORF’s Excitement for JJ’s Participation
Stefanie Groiss-Horowitz, Programme Director at ORF, expressed enthusiasm about JJ’s selection:
“JJ is an exceptional talent! With him, we are sending a unique artist to Basel who brings his own magic to the Eurovision Song Contest stage, with captivating pop and classical singing.”

🗓️ When Will Austria’s Eurovision Song Be Released?

🇦🇹 Austria’s Eurovision Legacy
Austria has a long and storied history at Eurovision, with two victories—Udo Jürgens in 1966 and Conchita Wurst in 2014. In recent years, Austria has experimented with different musical styles, sending pop, electronic, and alternative acts. In 2024, Kaleen narrowly missed out on the Grand Final, placing 11th in the semi-finals. Will JJ’s operatic-meets-pop style bring Austria back to the top of the scoreboard?
