Finnish broadcast Yle has announced today that they have already chosen the 7 songs to complete in their national selections, Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu. On the official Instagram account for UMK, it was revealed that the lucky 7 were chosen from a total of 278 applications.
Tapop Hakanen from Yle is quoted as saying: “The standard of songs and artists was insanely strong and I’m sure in the spring of 2021 we will ahve the toughest UMK of all time”.
Fans will have to wait until January 19th next year for a reveal of the finalists who will compete. The competition songs will then be released one at a time on consecutive weekdays. The final selection will then take place on February 20th 2021.
Aksel Kankaanranta won UMK20 with the song ‘Looking Back‘. However, after the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 was cancelled he was not offered a direct pass to represent Finland in 2021.
