UMK 2021 participants will be revealed on January 13!

| December 22, 2020

Eurovision 2021 is getting serious! More and more national selections are about to give details about their participants. Some of them already revealed full songs or at least snippets of them. Now, the Finnish broadcaster YLE revealed that the participants list is going to get revealed on January 13th 2021 for Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu. Up to this point, there hasn’t been any details about possible participants.

The format of UMK has changed over the years. Introduced in 2012, it has constantly been used as the Finnish national selection show for Eurovision. The number of participants varied from 10 acts in 2016 down to one act in both 2018 & 2019 where the artists have been internally selected before like Saara Aalto in 2018 and Darude with Sebastian Rejman in 2019.

In those two years, only the song has been chosen in the show. Since the introduction of UMK, Finland managed three out of eight possible qualifications to the final. In 2014, Softengine chalked up an 11th place with the song Something Better which has been the best result from a UMK song. In general, Finland has been able to win the Contest once in 2006 with the song Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordi.

In 2020, Aksel Kankaaranta was supposed to represent Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam after he won UMK 2020 with the song Looking Back. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the contest was cancelled. Unlike many other countries who internally nominated the 2020 act for the upcoming year, Finland decided to stick to their national selection show.
