Song submission opens for Dora 2021 with changes to the format!

| October 26, 2020

Croatian broadcaster HRT announced the opening for song submissions for Dora 2021. Croatia has decided against internally selecting Dora 2020 winner Damir Kedžo as their 2021 Eurovision representative. Like in previous years, Croatia has chosen to select its entry again through its established national selection Dora for 2021.

Like previous years, songs can be submitted to the broadcaster via their website. The standard Eurovision Song Contest rules such as the participant must be aged at least 16 and the song cannot exceed 3 minutes in length. Rules specific to Dora 2021 include:

  • Any participant must be a Croatian citizen
  • The team behind the song can be any nationality
  • The lyrics can be sung any official European language

Given the current Covid-19 situation, HRT has not officially announced final details on how Dora 2021 will be held. Whilst HRT has confirmed that Dora 2021 will not be cancelled, like the Eurovision 2021 contest, HRT are working on four different scenarios to how Dora 2021 will be held. If the situation allows for Dora 2021 to held live it will happen on the 13th February 2021 in Opatija. Some confirmed changes to the format are all backing vocals must be pre-recorded and only 14 songs will compete in the final unlike 16 songs in 2020.

Will Damir Kedžo return to Dora 2021?

Damir Kedžo has not confirmed publicly whether he will enter a song for Dora 2021 but in June 2020 confirmed his desire to still represent Croatia at Eurovision in the future. In response to the disappointment Damir expressed for not being internally selected, Dora producer Uršula Tolj said, “Just as the Eurovision Song Contest will not be cancelled, neither will Dora. Croatia is participating in the competition and continues the resumed tradition of choosing its representative in the national competition.”

Croatia at Eurovision

Since making its debut in the 1993 contest, Croatia has made 25 appearances in Eurovision. Despite never having made the final top 3, they ended 4th twice, in 1996 with Maja Blagdan’s Sveta Ljubav and in 1999 with fan-favourite Doris Dragović and her song Marija Magdalena. Other notable Croatian entries are Severina’s Moja Štikla (2006), Nina Kraljić’s Lighthouse (2016) and Jacques Houdek’s My Friend (2017). Damir Kedžo was selected to represent Croatia at Eurovision 2020, before the contest got cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
