RTL have confirmed a national final will be used to find Luxembourg's Eurovision 2024 representative.
The Grand Duchy have confirmed that on Saturday January 27th 2024, a live national final will be held at the Rockhal, a concert hall in Beval, a neighbourhood in the city of Esch-sur-Alzette in Southern Luxembourg.
The submissions window has already opened. Singers with or without a song, and songwriters without a singer, are all eligle to apply, and can do so at www.eurovision.lu. Each soloist / group / songwriter can submit a maximum of three songs. The deadline for artists and songwriters to submit their song(s) is Sunday October 1st 2023.
Soloists or groups without a song must must upload a video which contains a brief introduction to themselves, and a performance of a song of their choice. This must be uploaded to www.eurovision.lu by Sunday 16th July 2023 at the latest.
Once the submissions window has closed, an expert panel will review all of the submissions, and will select the singers who will compete in the live national final. RTL will officially announce the names of the finalists and their songs. It is unknown at this stage how many acts will take part in the national final.
Rules and regulations
- All applicants must be at least 16 years old by January 27th 2024.
- They must be flexible between November 2023 and May 2024.
- They must possess live singing abilities and must feel at ease on a large stage.
- They must hold Luxembourgish nationality, must have resided in Luxembourg for at least three years or must exhibit a strong cultural involvement and proven connection with the Luxembourgish music scene.
- Songs can be in any language, must not contain discriminatory or political lyrics, must not exceed three minutes, and cannot have been released or performed before September 1st 2023.
On May 12th 2023, Luxembourg confirmed that they would be returning to the Eurovision Song Contest, after an absence of 30 years. They are one of the founding countries of the Eurovision Song Contest, having participated in the very first contest in 1956, and are one of the most successful, having won five times (1961, 1965, 1972, 1973, 1983).
Due to a string of bad results in recent years, Luxembourg called it quits after Eurovision 1993. In October 2003, they initially confirmed their participation for the 2004 contest, before withdrawing their application, mainly due to the participation fee. In June 2004, there were rumours they could return in 2005, but nothing came of them.
In 2009, director of RTL Steve Schmit met with EBU representatives, as they were considering to return in 2010; but this didn’t happen due to financial issues. In July 2014, Luxembourg confirmed they would not be returning in 2015, with the main reasons being financial.
In December 2022, the Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, began discussions regarding the return of Luxembourg to Eurovision 2024, something which was officially confirmed in May 2023.
