TVP announced the rules of the Polish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. Krajowe Eliminacje will take place on the 26th of February and the list of participants will be announced no later than the 25th of January.

The announcement came as a surprise, since TVP doesn’t often introduce the rules that early in the Eurovision season. Unlike in previous years, this time the broadcaster has given potential representatives a lot of time to apply – the registration period ends on the 15th of January. The rules also mention, that TVP might give out one Wild Card to an artist who did not apply during the official selection process. The name Krajowe Eliminacje was last used in 2018, when Gromee feat. Lukas Meijer won with Light Me Up, but the format is much more similar to this year’s Tu Bije Serce Europy.

What to expect from the Polish national final?

Krajowe Eliminacje will take place on Sunday, February 26th and will include performances from no more than 10 artists. The songs don’t have to premiere during the national final, so any track shorter than 3 minutes and released after the 1st of September 2022 is eligible. The rules also don’t specify any particular limits when it comes to lyrics – any language is allowed. The only exception is that they can’t be offensive to any social group. Artists have to be at least 16 on the 1st of May 2023 and they are encouraged to take part in the songwriting process.

Judging format

The jury panel will include 5 people selected by TVP, and it might differ between the different stages of the selection. In the first phase, the judges will pick together, up to 10 artists who will perform in the national final.

The Polish representative will be chosen by the split vote of juries and televoting during the live final. Every jury member will individually give out 1-10 points. Then the points will be added and turned into percentages. Televotes will also be counted proportionally. Like last year, the hosts will read out the average scores of artists in places 10-4 and the top 3 will go to the final round of Krajowe Eliminacje.

After their second performances, jury and viewers will once again vote for their favourites. As in the previous round, the votes will be turned into percentages and the winner will be announced. In case of a tie, the jury’s vote will be decisive.
