Krakow was all set to host Junior Eurovision 2020 before COVID-19 struck

Konrad Smuga, Creative Director for Junior Eurovision 2020 has confirmed that the contest was due to be held in the city of Krakow, at the Tauron Arena, but the plans had to be changed due to the ongoing COVID-19 situation.

At the beginning of 2020, Krakow was the front runner to host this years contest, but soon enough, Krakow was out of the race as disagreements with Polish Broadcaster TVP set in, as well as financial woes of hosting a big contest amidst a global pandemic.

Speaking to Eurowizja Junior, Konrad has confirmed that the Tauron Arena in Krakow was to play host to Junior Eurovision 2020: We confirm, absolutely. There were four scenarios – scenario A, B, C and D. We did scenario C for obvious reasons. But yes, in the first ideas, the “Eurovision Junior 2020″ competition was to be held in Krakow, in Tauron Arena. That’s the truth.”

Despite the fact that this years Junior Eurovision Song Contest was on a much smaller scale than previous years, and with each country pre-recording their performances, mostly in their home countries, Konrad is still very happy with the way everything turned out: “…We gave 110% and thanks to the fact that we had really nice conditions provided by Polish Television, we were able to implement our ideas. We had a lot of support from this institution… There is nothing I would have done otherwise here.”

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 was broadcast live from TVP television studios in Warsaw, Poland. A total of 12 acts took part, with France winning the contest for the first time, and scoring their first Eurovision-related win since 1977!

Runner-up for a second year running was Kazakhstan, followed by Spain, who held on to their Junior Eurovision record of never finishing outside of the top 4 to date. The Netherlands finished in fourth place again, as they did in 2019, whilst Belarus completed the top 5. Germany made their debut in the contest.
