Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian nominated for ARIA Awards

| October 13, 2020

It would be an understatement to say it’s been a tough year for many big musical events, which had to be postponed or cancelled. But the ARIA Awards, Australia’s top musical honor, are pushing through with plans for a live ceremony. On Tuesday, the nominees for the 2020 ARIAs have been announced, and Eurovision fans have a reason to be excited.

Two of Australia’s past Eurovision artists – Jessica Mauboy and Guy Sebastian – are up for some major awards in the coming event. Jessica is nominated for Album of the year for her chart-topping fourth studio album Hilda, released late last year. The album is also up for Best Cover Art and its main producers, Louis Schoorl and DNA, are nominated for the Producer of the Year award for their work on the album.

Guy, meanwhile, nabbed two nominations for his song “Standing With You,” a top-ten hit off his forthcoming ninth studio album, T.R.U.T.H (out this weekend). Guy and the song are in the race for the Best Male Artist and Best Music Video awards. The field of nominees is especially dense this year, with such Aussie stars as Sia, Troye Sivan and Tame Impala (and of course the greatest Australian musical act of all time: The Wiggles). But Jessica and Guy have a great shot at winning, having already racked up a few of the pointy ARIA trophies in the past – Guy with six and Jessica with two.

Just as a reminder, Guy Sebastian was Australia’s inaugural Eurovision entrant in 2015, charming the audience in Vienna with his “Tonight Again” and finishing fifth. Jessica Mauboy, after performing as part of the interval act in 2014, represented the country at the 2018 contest, radiating positivity on the Lisbon stage with “We Got Love” and ending up at a decent 20th place. Interestingly, the producers nominated for Jessica’s album have a Eurovision history of their own: Louis Schoorl co-wrote “Tonight Again,” while the duo of DNA worked on “We Got Love” as well as Australia’s 2016, 2017 and 2020 entries.

Keeping your fingers crossed for Jessica and Guy? Going to stay up late (or wake up early) to watch the ceremony? Let us know in the comments below!
