It’s time to celebrate as Portugal confirm participation for Eurovision 2021!

| October 20, 2020

Portugal have officially confirmed that they will be participating in Eurovision 2021, and thus, become the 39th country to confirm for next years contest.

The Portuguese broadcaster will once again use Festival da Canção to find their representative for the 65th Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam. However, they have announced that some changes will be made to the show. There will be two semi finals and one final as normal, but a total of 20 songs will be competing in the competition instead of the usual 16, which means that five songs from each semi final will advance to the final.

Out of the 20 songs, RTP will invite singers and songwriters to compose 18 of the songs, whilst the remaining two songs will be selected via public submissions. A jury panel made up of music, radio and television experts will listen to all public submissions and select two to take part in Festival da Canção 2021.

Portuguese nationals and residents of Portugal are eligible to send songs via the public submissions, regardless of their previous experience in publishing songs. All submissions must be sent to: festivaldacancao@rtp.pt by November 25th. The broadcaster has released a full set of rules for next years contest.

The confirmation of Festival da Canção 2021 means that Elisa, Portugal’s representative in 2020, will not be automatically chosen to sing for Portugal next year. However, she could submit a song to the public submissions.
