Italian superstar Laura Pausini has revealed in a recent interview with elespanol her thoughts on representing Italy at Eurovision.
In the interview, Laura revealed she would’ve loved to have represented Italy at Eurovision after winning the newcomer’s category at Sanremo in 1993. However, at the time the winner of the big artists (Campioni) category earned the right to represent Italy at Eurovision. Laura explained:
“When I won, Eurovision was not known in Italy and it was a shame because I would love to participate at that time. A few years ago I was asked to participate, but I could not because I was on a world tour.”
Laura revealed she was approached to represent Italy a few years ago. It is likely it was 2014, as it was the only time Italy internally selected their representative and not selecting through Sanremo, since their return in 2011. In 2014, Laura was undertaking her world tour The Greatest Hits World Tour and likely ruling her out due to the lack of a suitable schedule.
At present Italy selects its representative through the Sanremo Music Festival. Given Laura has not competed in Sanremo since her victory in 1993, and has since gone on to become one of the most successful artists from Italy ever, it is unlikely she will return to compete in Sanremo as an act.
The last time Italy internally selected its representative was in 2014, with Emma Marrone who finished in 21st, one of the worse results in Italy’s history. Since its return in 2011, Italy has gone onto finish in the top 10 every year except 2016. Given the success of acts from Sanremo earning high placings in Eurovision itself it is unlikely Italy will change its successful format to selecting its Eurovision act.
Italy had confirmed that its Eurovision 2021 act will be selected via Sanremo where the winner will be given first right of refusal.
