After 17 years away, the United Kingdom will return to the Junior Eurovision Song Contest!
In a press release, British broadcaster BBC announced the country’s return to the contest this year taking place in Yerevan. The show will be broadcast on CBBC, BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
This will be the first time the BBC broadcast the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, as the UK previously took part through broadcaster ITV.
Patricia Hidalgo, Director BBC Children’s and Education, said:
“We are beyond excited to bring the Junior Eurovision Song Contest to the BBC for the first time, and to showcase the diverse young musical talent from across Europe for children and their families to discover and enjoy together. This junior version of Eurovision will undoubtedly encapsulate the same spirit of unity that the adult contest brings, reflecting the heart of what CBBC is all about, an inclusive channel that celebrates the diversity and creativity in all children. I can’t wait to unveil our own musical talent who will proudly represent the UK.”
This announcement comes off the back of the UK’s 2nd place finish in adult Eurovision this year, as well as the news that the UK will host the 2023 contest on behalf of Ukraine.
No news on the selection method for the artist and the song has been announced at this time.
UK at Junior Eurovision
The UK took part in the first Junior Eurovision back in 2003 when Tom Morley came in 3rd place with the song “My Song For The World“. Their best result came the following year when Cory Spedding and her song “The Best Is Yet To Come” came in 2nd place.
The UK last took part in the contest in 2005, when they finish 14th.
