BBC have announced that Olly Alexander will be representing the United Kingdom at Eurovision 2024 in Malmö!
The announcement was made by Alexander himself in British reality TV show Strictly Come Dancing. Speaking on the show, Alexander said:
“I love Eurovision so much, it’s a dream come true.”
In the press release, Alexander continued:
“I really can’t believe I’m going to be a part of such a special legacy and fly the flag for the UK in the gayest way possible. I’m determined to give it everything I’ve got and put on an excellent and unforgettable performance for you all!”
The song, likely released next year, will be co-written by Alexander and Danny L Harle, who has produced hits for Dua Lipa, Chic and Charli XCX.
Who is Olly Alexander?
Olly Alexander is 33 year old singer, songwriter and actor Harrogate, North Yorkshire. He is best known for his time as lead singer of Years & Years, as well as his acting performance in the Channel 4 drama series, It’s A Sin.
As part of Years & Years, Alexander rose the fame in the music scene with his single “King“, which reached number 1 in the UK charts. Since then he’s collaborated with artists such as MNEK, Jax Jones, Kylie Minogue and Elton John. His Eurovision single will be the first one Alexander releases as a solo artist.
United Kingdom at Eurovision
Last year’s result was able to remind a lot of people that the UK is one of the most successful countries in Eurovision history. They have won the contest 5 times (1967, 1969, 1976, 1981, 1997) and been runners up a record 15 times. Their last victory came in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves and their song “Love Shine a Light”.
Since 2000, while the UK have reached in the top 10 three times, they have often been seen as one of the weaker countries in Eurovision, finishing last year five times and receiving 0 points twice in 2003 and 2021.
In 2022 the UK’s fortunes finally changed, with Sam Ryder and his song “SPACE MAN” finishing in 2nd place, winning the jury vote. However in 2023, while hosting the event in Liverpool on behalf of Ukraine, the UK finished near the bottom of the leaderboard once again. With Mae Muller and her song “I Wrote A Song” finishing in 25th place.
