Finland’s Eurovision 2020 representative Aksel Kankaanranta has confirmed he has not submitted a song for UMK 2021. As a consequence he will not return to represent Finland at Eurovision 2021.
Askel confirmed the news in an interview with Finish entertainment website Voice.fi. Aksel explained in the interview he was about to apply for UMK 2021 but ultimately decided against it eventually. In the interview, Askel confirmed he was not against competing in UMK in the future explaining:
““Now let’s take a little look at someday when I could apply again. I’m not really saying I would ever want to participate again, but let’s see.”
The current Covid-19 pandemic caused Eurovision 2020 to be cancelled. Whilst the EBU has given guarantee Eurovision will be held in 2021 regardless of the situation. The guarantee was not enough to convince Askel and played a part in the reason not to resubmit a song for UMK 2021. He explained “Maybe in a way it was whether Eurovision will come next year at all, when the terrible situations are still on.”
