Speaking to ad.nl, Twan van de Nieuwenhuijzen has confirmed that 75% of all competing countries in this years Eurovision Song Contest have already submitted their live-on-tape back-up performance. The EBU announced back in November that all acts must record a back-up performance that will be used in the event the artist(s) cannot travel to Rotterdam, or in the event they need to quarantine.
The majority of countries have recorded their back-up performances in their home countries. However, there are also a number of acts who have travelled abroad to record their performances.
Sofia in Bulgaria played host to the most number of delegations, with Cyprus, Greece, Malta and Moldova all recording their performances there alongside Bulgaria. Jendrik from Germany joined The Roop in Vilnius for his performance, whilst Vasil joined the girls from Hurricane in Belgrade. Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Norway, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland all recorded their performances in their home countries, whist San Marino recorded theirs in neighbouring Italy.
In preparation for their back-up performances, each country must adhere to a list of production guidelines, to ensure as fair and equal contest as possible.
- No audience is permitted to be in the venue for back-up performances
- The performance must be unpublished until the contest in May
- No virtual/augmented reality, green screen or overlays can be used
- Nothing like confetti or water can be used
- No drone shots are allowed
- All performances must be different to national final performances. The same set is allowed to be used though
- All performances must be submitted to the EBU within one hour of being recorded, to minimise the risk of any post production, and must be submitted by the end of March at the latest
