Slovenian broadcaster RTVSLO have confirmed to Evrovizja.com they are yet to decide how they will select their song for Eurovision 2021 representative Ana Soklic. In a statement, RTVSLO confirmed they are evaluating several different scenarios. The statement reads:
“We are preparing several scenarios, as – for the same reason – on most broadcasters and the EBU for Eurovision 2021. The system of choosing Ana’s song for 2021 also depends, at least in part, on the possibility of conducting the selection, so we will have to wait a little longer on the final decision”
Since its debut in 1993, Slovenia has selected their participants via a national selection every year except for 2013, when RTVSLO internally selected Hannah Mancini and her song. Due to the cancellation of Eurovision 2020 the broadcaster internally selected Ana Soklic, who was due to represent Slovenia in 2020, for the 2021 contest.
In July 2020, RTVSLO opened submissions for interested songwriters and composers to submit songs. The submission period closed in September 2020 and a total of 191 songs were received. A possible list of songs that are under consideration could be published to rtvslo.si by 31st December at latest, with the final song expected to be decided by 9th March 2021.
Upon the opening of the song submission, Ana encouraged a range of songs and was not only limited to ballads. She encouraged interested songwriters and composers “go as far as is possible”. The quality of songs submitted will be one of the indicators to whether RTVSLO opts to hold a national selection, consisting of Ana performing multiple songs or to select the song internally. The other indicator will be the situation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic and whether staging a national final would be possible to do given potential restrictions.
