| August 3, 2020

The Bulgarian broadcaster BNT has revealed that they are considering a return to the 2021 Junior Eurovision Song Contest. But before they can return to the contest, BNT first needs to find the necessary funds for their participation.

Bulgaria also announced that they will not participate in the 2020 edition which is to be held in Warsaw, Poland in November this year, after Viki Gabor defended the title for Poland in Gliwice-Silesia last year. They have stated that Bulgaria’s plans at the moment are to focus on their Eurovision participation first before Junior Eurovision.

Bulgaria withdrew from Junior Eurovision after the 2016 edition held in Malta, where their representative Lidia Ganeva placed ninth with her song ‘Magical Day’.

So far, a total of 13 countries have confirmed their participation in Junior Eurovision 2020 in Warsaw, Poland.

  1. Belarus
  2. France
  3. Georgia
  4. Germany
  5. Ireland
  6. Kazakhstan
  7. Malta
  8. Netherlands
  9. Poland
  10. Russia
  11. Serbia
  12. Spain
  13. Ukraine

Australia, North Macedonia and Wales have all confirmed they will not be participating in the contest this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, whilst 2019 participating countries Albania, Armenia, Italy and Portugal haven’t made any confirmations yet. Germany will be making their Junior Eurovision debut this year in Poland.

Bulgaria at Junior Eurovision

When Bulgaria debuted in JESC in 2007, the group Bon-Bon came in seventh place with their song ‘Bonbolandiya’. Since 2007 Bulgaria has participated six times and even hosted the contest once in 2015. Their best scoring entry is from 2014, when Krisia, Hassan and Ibrahim ended up in the second place with their song ‘Planet of the Children’ in Malta.
